Global Redesign
My largest project so far has been for a global supplier of tires. On this endeavor, I led design efforts concurrently for multiple projects across multiple platforms, including web, tablet, mobile, desktop, and print. To summarize, the client was upgrading from a 1990’s command-line system to a modern framework with a touch-enabled user interface. At the start of the project, I drove out to one of the local tire retread plants to get a first-person look at how the process is done and to meet the prospective user base for the new suite of programs my team was creating. It was a factory setting, so there were many unique factors to take into account - dim lighting, users wearing gloves, varying tech-literacy, and fast-paced working conditions. The need was for a desktop software that would be used by the line workers to track steps in the retread process for tire casings, plus a mobile app for tracking tire shipments, and another app for inspecting trucks before they hit the road. Both of the mobile apps needed to be responsive for tablet as well. In addition to the new software, the factory reports running on the old command-line system also got a revamp. Instead of reports that displayed on the terminal, we designed and developed new reports that could be generated in CSV format for data analysis and in PDF format for print viewing. After 2 years of support and UX work, my time on the project has come to an end, and while I’m sure there will continue to be an effort to iterate to newer and greater things, the design work has been completed for now, and it has brought a seamless, efficient experience to an outdated system – and one more satisfied customer.
